Support for the Elderly
It is well known that as a society we are living much longer thanks to improved living conditions and health care.
While being able to reach old age is something to be thankful for, in many ways, there are several challenges facing the elderly, which we all need to pay more attention to.
These may include:
- Loneliness, marginalisation due to age and a loss of purpose
- Financial insecurity
- Difficulty with everyday tasks and mobility
- Finding the right support for day-to-day care
- Getting access to healthcare
- Planning for end of life
Often it is not until we start to age ourselves or we see a loved one struggling that we sit up and take notice, but as a society, we can do more to make life easier for our ageing population.
South Wairarapa Rotary is looking for ways to increase awareness and to facilitate service to "at risk" seniors living in South Wairarapa.
Do you know someone who :
- Is alone
- Is insecure
- Has low mobility

Our Focus areas
Help us help you or others you may know who may be needing support with:
Loneliness
Many older adults in our society suffer from loneliness – a painful, distressing feeling arising from perceptions of social isolation
Insecurity
Financial insecurity feeds on itself and accelerates because humans are sensitive to feelings of weakness and defeat.
Low mobility
Mobility problems may be unsteadiness while walking, difficulty getting in and out of a chair, or falls. Common in older people.
Daily care
Support could include home help, assistance with personal cares, housing modifications, access to daily living aids.
Health care
If you're getting older, you may be finding it harder to cope on your own. There are support services available to support you.
End of Life
Advance care planning is the process of thinking about, talking about and planning for future health care and end-of-life care.
